The Lake

“Love,” God whispered as he stood next to her, hovering a few inches above the calm water of the lake, “we stand here today with some decisions to make.”

She didn’t want to hear it. It took everything in her power to want to focus on the words that God was saying. She didn’t want to be on the lake, she didn’t want to be standing next to God, she didn’t want any of it.

The faintest whisper came from her soul, “I don’t want to choose.” And then again, “I don’t want to have to choose.”

The lake changed. The first lake was a grayish-blue color with light tan trees lining the shores. The new lake was a deep, dark blue with lush, deep green trees creating a thick forest to the edge of the water. The first lake oozed of resistance, while this lake felt luxurious. The deep, rich colors relaxed the body and mind.

Vines emerged from the surface of the water and danced around their feet. Continuing to grow, flowers bloomed from the vines as they intertwined, multiplied, and formed a platform beneath them. The platform grew larger and larger until a path was formed that led to the lake’s shore.

“My love,” God whispered even more quietly than before. He looped his arm with hers at their elbows and offered to guide her along the new path.

She refused to move forward.

He released her arm and demonstrated that the path would hold them, that it was sturdy and capable of supporting human travel.

She was afraid of falling into the lake.

With a snap of his fingers, the water level of the lake dropped to the lakebed, leaving only small puddles. The vine boardwalk hovered above the ground, but what lay below the water was no longer a mystery. All had been revealed.

She took a small step forward.

“Love,” God whispered, standing in front of her, holding both hands, and slowly stepping backward as she thought about taking another step forward, “I cannot always show you,” he gestured at the dry lake bed around them, “the safety of every choice you make.” God thought in his head, “There are many factors and many reasons.” She looked up into his eyes. “Do you trust me?” he asked.

“No,” her soul answered without hesitation.

Inside her heart, a storm raged to the surface. Large, gray, thunderous clouds formed and swirled, and pouring rain burst through in waves.

With his hand, palm up, facing her heart, he calmed her internal storm with the gentle energy of a rainbow. Light energy in all of the colors of the rainbow flowed from God’s hand into her broken heart, soothing her pain, healing her cracked heart, and offering forgiveness, love, and faith. God’s heart spoke to her heart, “I’m sorry for all of the pain you have been through.”
